Tramping Tracks around Te Aroha

Mt Te Aroha Summit Walk - 4 to 6 hours return. Either walk the bush track which starts behind the Soda Geyser or walk up the mountain road which starts at the end of Tui Road on town boundary. |

Waiorongomai Valley - extensive walks around NZ’s oldest original tramlines; part of this historical gold mining site. 1 to 5 hours return. |

Howarth Wetland Reserve - loop walk on bank of the Waihou River. Access via the Railway Bridge or Spur Street. 1 hour circuit. |

Heritage Trail - amble around the town viewing 23 historic buildings and sites of interest. 1 hour. Guides are available from Information Centre ($1) |

Wairere Falls - between Te Aroha and Matamata on Kaimai Range. A reasonably hard climb but well worthwhile. 2 to 3 hours return. |

Tahua Track / Killarney Lakes - 9 kms south of Te Aroha. At present closed due to logging operations. 3 to 5 hours return. |

Thompson’s Track - 12 kms south of Te Aroha. Can be quite muddy as used by 4WD vehicles. 2 to 3 hours to top. |

Karangahapi Gorge - Several walks, some along old railway lines through tunnel and along riverside. 1 to 3 hours |

Thompson’s Track - well used by 4WD clubs and individuals throughout the year. Can get really muddy in some areas on western side on way to top. Approximately 7 kms to top with track continuing down eastern side to Katikati Area. The eastern side is basically impassable in winter and even in summer due to deep muddy holes, etc
